This post includes a video tutorial!! Scroll down to check it out.

Many people have no clue that this feature exists. It changes the game for workflow and midi sequencing. It is… capture recording. Capture recording takes literally a second to set up; simply right click anywhere on Logic’s control bar at the top of the screen and check the box next to capture recording.

MIDI Note Automation in Logic Pro

Maya Wagner
Submitted by mwagner2@berklee.edu on

Automating MIDI parameters such as Pitch Bend and Velocity are super important, especially when you want to get specific sounds and really go deeply into specific aspects of your project. Automation means controlling a parameter over time, giving a user more control over their sounds and tracks. This post will focus on automating specific MIDI protocols for a specific MIDI note, but this works for a length of multiple notes as well!

All versions of Ableton Live come with the Simpler. In contrast, the Sampler is $99 dollars on its own, or included with Ableton Live Suite.

So, it’s assumed that the Sampler is bigger and better than Simpler, but what are the actual differences? What can you do with Sampler that’s worth an extra $99?

You’ve probably heard that Ableton being referred to as the “queen of sampling.” Well… maybe not in that phrasing. But if you know anything about Ableton, you probably get that it's a sampling beast.

A sampler is a multisampling tool. It can be used for many different purposes, but with a quick Google search, you’ll find that the biggest and most common thing Sampler is known for is multisampling.

Creating Multi-timbral Instruments In Logic (Feat. Kontakt)

Maya Wagner
Submitted by mwagner2@berklee.edu on

Creating multi-timbral Instruments in Logic allows for a specific type of organization within projects. For projects which include full MIDI orchestrations and other software-instrument heavy composition, using multi-timbral instruments allows one external plugin, such as Native Instruments’ Kontakt to run up to 16 separate instrument tracks. In a few cases, this can save on a computer's CPU usage, although newer computing technologies have made this less relevant.

Despite the debate, it is important to know how to create multi-timbral instruments in Logic, especially for film scoring students.

Free Plugins from Around the Internet

Kari Estes
Submitted by kestes@berklee.edu on

There are lots of amazing plugins available in the world, but it seems that most of these can cost anywhere from $20 per plugin to $200. If you’re like me (a broke college student) you can’t afford all this fancy software and try looking for things on a budget. After doing some research, I’ve found a collection of plugins available for free for people to download. While they surely surely aren't the expensive plugins, this collection has proven to be very useful and worth the download (and hey, who doesn’t love free stuff!)
