Setting up a Tempo Track from Tapping with Cubase Pro

Tutorial Created by Althea Steynberg, Edited by Michael J. MacDonald

Step 1

  1. To start, add an instrument track and load an instrument. If not already, connect your MIDI keyboard to your computer.
  2. On your Instrument track that you just added, set the track time base to Linear, indicated by the Clock icon on your track.

Step 2

  1. On your Instrument track, activate the Record Enable button. Then, in your transport, hit Record. (*Obviously, during this process, you want to have your click turned OFF so that you can tap your own tempo! To do so, hit C on your computer Keyboard or locate the Click at the bottom right of your screen*)

On the MIDI keyboard, tap the tempo by hitting any key consecutively to the beat of your music. When finished, hit stop (spacebar) to finish the recording. Hit play to listen to the recorded MIDI notes together with the original audio recording/video to check if the timing is correct.

-Fair warning: this may be a process you have to do a few times. It's not often that someone can tap the tempo on their first try perfectly, so try a few times until you get the take that you're super confident with using for your tempo!

Step 3

-Select your new MIDI part in the Project window.

Now, at the top of your screen,

select MIDI > Functions > Merge Tempo From Tapping

The Tempo From Tapping window will now pop up on your screen. Specify what type of note duration you tapped during the recording.

Click OK.

-Now, turn on the Click and see if you are happy with the result!

Fair warning: this may be a process you have to do a few times. It's not often that someone can tap the tempo on their first try perfectly, so try a few times until you get the take that you're super confident with using for your tempo!  Open the Tempo Track Editor to see and edit the new tempo map you created!

Here we have attached a video tutorial that goes along with the written tutorial as well! See below.
