The Schillinger System at Berklee
This month's display honors composer and theorist Joseph Schillinger (September 1, 1895 - March 23, 1943) on the 120th anniversary of his birth. The materials highlighted span both library and college archives** collections and include works by and about Schillinger as well as his students. Among Schillinger's students was Berklee's founder, Lawrence Berk, who became an authorized teacher of the Schillinger System of Musical Composition and in 1945 established Schillinger House, now known as Berklee College of Music, based on this mathematical theory of music. For more on the college's history, we also recommend checking out Berklee: the First Fifty Years, which includes a wealth of archival images and documents.  ** Please...
Berklee in Valencia
Below are library items that are popular with the four graduate programs at Valencia.
Led Zeppelin. Alfred Hitchcock. The Beach Boys. What do they all have in common? One of the very first electronic instruments--the theremin! This month we are highlighting library materials that feature this quirky granddaddy of the synthesizer.  Then, at the end of June, we'll be giving one away.  UPDATE: The theremin contest is now closed. Find out who the theremin contest winner is at our theremin clinic, Thursday June 25 at 6pm!

Oliver Sacks display
Oliver Sacks--physician, best-selling author, and professor of neurology at the NYU School of Medicine--wrote a touching piece in the New York Times on February 19, after learning he that he probably had only a few short months left in his battle with cancer.  This display highlights some of his many contributions to the fields of neurology and music therapy through his research.
I'm Every Woman
This display is an eclectic gathering from the long list of accomplished black women musicians.  While we missed a ton of the usual faces, (Ella, Aretha, and Billie for starters!) we hope this will inspire a listening list of your own. Got a listening recommendation you're dying to share? Leave the CD number and a brief description in the comment section below!
