This free-reed keyboard instrument was first manufactured Hohner in Trossingen in 1958.  Now known generically by the name Melodica, it has been called for by composers such as Steve Reich (Melodica, 1966, with tape loop) and played by blues, jazz, reggae, indie folk, and other popular music performers. This month we are highlighting albums that feature this modern musical marvel.  Then at the end of June, we'll be giving one away!   Find out how you can win your very own melodica on our contest page.

Win the Lee Oskar diatonic harmonica in the display case! Click here for contest details.   The harmonica, sometimes called a harp or mouth organ, is a mouth-blown instrument sounded with free reeds (one for each note). The simplest instruments are diatonic, with a single row of channels cut into a block of cedar or now often of plastic. Two metal plates, one mounted above the block and the other below, carry a reed for each note (making 20 reeds in all), the upper plate with the reeds set to sound on blow, the lower plate to sound on draw. While mouth organs originated in East Asia some thousands of years ago, the ancestor of the modern harmonica was invented around 1830 in Germany. The cheap and portable instrument quickly became an important member in...
"Woodrow Wilson Guthrie was a short, wiry guy with a mop of curly hair under a cowboy hat, as I first saw him. He'd stand with his guitar slung on his back, spinning out stories like Will Rogers, with a faint, wry grin. Then he'd hitch his guitar around and sing the longest long outlaw ballad you ever heard, or some Rabelaisian fantasy he'd concocted the day before and might never sing again," Pete Seeger described Woody Guthrie in his 1967 eulogy in Life magazine. Guthrie, Seeger claimed, wrote more than 1000 songs. Many of them, like "This Land is Your Land," "So Long, It's Been Good to Know You," and "This Train Is Bound for Glory," have become American folk song standards. Join us in celebrating what would have been his 100th birthday! CDs on display: DVD...

Reggaetón is a fusion of Spanish rap and hip-hop that has gained popularity since the mid-1990s. It began with elements as far ranging as Jamaican reggae and dancehall, North American hip-hop, and contemporary rhythm and blues mixed with such Latin American musical styles as cumbia, bomba, and plena; however, many other Latin American music beats have been incorporated. While Panama and Puerto Rico are credited for the development of reggaetón, in 2004 it exploded internationally, with songs from Daddy Yankee's Barrio Fino, Tego Calderon's El Enemy de los Guasibiri, and Ivy Queen's Diva and Real gaining airplay in the United States and Europe.   Books and Scores on display CDs and DVDs on display Magazines on display:   Books and Scores on...
