Reggaetón is a fusion of Spanish rap and hip-hop that has gained popularity since the mid-1990s. It began with elements as far ranging as Jamaican reggae and dancehall, North American hip-hop, and contemporary rhythm and blues mixed with such Latin American musical styles as cumbia, bomba, and plena; however, many other Latin American music beats have been incorporated. While Panama and Puerto Rico are credited for the development of reggaetón, in 2004 it exploded internationally, with songs from Daddy Yankee's Barrio Fino, Tego Calderon's El Enemy de los Guasibiri, and Ivy Queen's Diva and Real gaining airplay in the United States and Europe.

by Robin Moore
ML3565 .M66 2010
The Spanish-speaking countries of Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico are a relatively small group of islands with a surprisingly wide-reaching influence on music. The birth place of enduring styles such as salsa and meringue and up-and-coming genres like reggaeton, the music of the region has yet be examined in a standalone volume. Robin Moore uses three themes--the cultural legacy of the slave trade, the creolization of Caribbean musical styles, and the impact of colonialism and race relations-to survey the region and draw parallels and contrasts between its various traditions.
