[Spontaneous Inventions film screening]

Thursday, June 17, 2010
6:00pm - 8:00pm
150 Massachusetts Ave, Media Lab

Join the library for a screening of a concert filmed live at the Aquarius Theatre in Los Angeles in 1986 starring Bobby McFerrin. Special guest Joey Blake, Associate Professor of Voice, will be on hand after the film to lead a discussion about Bobby McFerrin and his unique take on singing and music. Light refreshments will be available.

The following description is taken from the film's insert by Bruce Lundval, September 2004:

It was Linda Goldstein who had the bold idea for Bobby's Blue Note debut. Why not stage a concert where Bobby would have to spontaneously interact with guest artists on the spot, with no advance knowledge of who would appear on stage? Kind of a musical surprise party... The concert was presented at the Aquarius Theatre in Los Angeles and was aptly titled Spontaneous Inventions, as Bobby created an inspired evening of spur-of-the-moment genius and then encountered his surprise guests head-on. No over-dubs, no studio tricks; it's all here as it happened, and the resulting album surely set the stage for Bobby's future one-man performances which continue to enchant audiences today.
